How to Hobby Guide: Testing Color Schemes

As I start a new commission I like to find out the vision that my client has for their army.

In this example we are painting some Tau Fire Warriors from Games Workshop. My Client has told me their preferred specifications, which are:

Heavy Weathering

WWI – Western-Front

and now I get to work.

Getting Started

The first thing and what I consider to be the most important thing that I do is look for references of WWI – Western – Front imagery on the Google Machine.

Heavy weathering I can do but the main question for my search is how to capture the right environment and the color palette for the weathering.

The images above give me the exact references I need; the color palette for the environment and the ground and cover types.

Why is the environment so important, you ask?

Let me repeat myself in saying that the weathering I plan to do on our model will have a unique color palette based off the environment it is surrounded by.

So naturally I will have to take this color palette into consideration when I come up with a base coloring scheme.

Starting the Test

I always like to figure things out ahead of time and before going to the model. For that I have (Shameless Plug) GoonBlanks!? They are resin cast practice blanks designed and made in the studio and used for designing color recipes, weathering techniques and weathering palettes. I sell these for $5.00 USD for a set of three. Below you can see the individual blanks that make up the set and a link to the product.

Color Recipe

Here I am using a trash pull from our mold and in the first step i’ll be priming the surface with the best primer known to man, Badger’s Stynylrez Grey Primer.

The Base Colors are kept to a minimum and I have made sure that the weathering palette will contrast nicely.

Main Color: Model Air Pale Blue Grey

Red Accent: Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlett

Black: Citadel Abbadon Black

Dark Grey: Citadel Elshin Grey

Silver Accent: Model Air Steel

Next up I’ve given the model a quick wash and mottling pass using Ak-Interactive Dark Brown Wash.

After the wash has dried I then follow up with Abbadon Black applied with a stippling brush on the edges the Grey and Red surfaces.

I then highlight the Grey by going back with a layer of Model Air: Pale Blue Grey working around and accenting the chipping effect. Then a second layer is applied, a 1:1 mixture of White and Pale Blue Grey and finally a 2:1 mixture of White and the Grey for brightest highlights.

I do the same thing on the Red using first a pass of Evil Sunz Scarlett then adding one part Troll Slayer Orange for another pass and finishing with a 2:1 mixture of Troll Slayer orange and Evil Sunz Scarlett.

Now I have start adding in some of the weathering palette by Glazing on Game Color Ink Sepia. This effect was applied over four layers of glazing, blowing dry each layer before applying the next.

For the final bit of weathering I use Abteilung502 Light Rush and mineral spirits to create rust streaks and stains.

The final touch is to test out any OSL effects I might need to tackle. I created this effect with Citadel Oxide as the light’s base color, highlighted by slowly adding in more and more White to the Oxide, and shaded with a few thinned down layers of Citadel Coleia Greenshade.

After I have finished with the testing and am happy with the result I then take it to a model and build a base that matches our client’s specification.

Hope you guys enjoyed this one and I’ll catch you in the next one!

New Backer Rewards Page for Easier Content Access

Good Afternoon!

I have just added a new page for easier content access that will help backers/supporters claim their associated rewards.

At the top right of the landing page you will see a new menu item called “GDC Backer Rewards” new menu

Access to the page has been restricted to supporters of the Grim Dark Compendium.

To gain access to this growing video library simply browse the GDC Entries and pledge support to the faction of your choice.

As a reminder no content will be created for a single faction until the entire funding goal has been met.

For a more in depth explanation of the Grim Dark Compendium and how it works follow this link.

backer pagge

Those with access, will land on this page which will have access to a list of all GDC Entries that are active, complete and/or currently being contributed to.

For now Legio Custodes stands alone, so start thinking about new Compendium Entries to support!

To access downloadable content simply click the picture associated with your pledge.

As another layer of protection users will only be able to access Rewards they have pledged for.

Clicking on a link for an Entry you haven’t pledged for will result in an error message.

LC Page

Next, users will be taken to the library of content that is associated with their pledge.

Clicking each entry’s picture or “Read More” tab will then take them a download screen.

DL page

Finally users will arrive on the page with the download option. Clicking the download button will start the down of the selected video.

Thank you all and please let me know what you think of this feature.
